Meghan and Prince Harry’s son Archie is now crawling: Tips to help your baby practice

Babies usually start crawling between four and six months of age. To help your baby crawl, here are some tips to keep in mind.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s baby Archie is growing up and now the six-month-old has started to crawl.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly talked about their son during a surprise visit with military families, as a part of events in honour of Rememberance Day, a British holiday that pays tribute to martyrs.

Babies usually start crawling between four and six months of age. To help your baby crawl, here are some tips to keep in mind:

When is your baby ready to crawl?

Before learning to crawl, your baby should be able to lie on his or her stomach and look horizontally up to you. Give your baby enough tummy time by placing them on your lap and stomach. Your baby’s neck and back muscles will strengthen gradually; your baby will be able to lift his head and look. The little one should also be able to start holding a toy, even if the grip is not too strong.

How do you teach your baby to crawl?

Now that your baby has started to hold toys, put one at arm distance from the baby, asking him or her to reach for it. If your baby succeeds, increase the toy’s distance. This will make your baby stretch to reach the toy. Keep repeating this for a week or two. To help your baby practice, you can also gently hold their body weight while still allowing their hands and feet to touch the ground. This will make them familiar with the movements of crawling.

What precautions should you take?

1. Your child would soon need enough space to crawl around and explore. This means you will now have to childproof your house to make sure your baby remains safe.

2. Avoid using baby walkers or carriers too much as they slow down muscle development and limit practice time on the floor.

3. Don’t force your baby. Pressing a child to develop a skill can impact his or her learning process negatively.
